Shenzhen Stadium has officially reopened after a five-year renovation project that has seen its capacity increase from 32,000 to 45,000.

The stadium welcomed 31,205 fans for Shenzhen Peng City FC’s 4-3 defeat against Yunnan Yukun in the Chinese Super League on Friday.

Shenzhen Peng City is part-owned by City Football Group, and the club relocated from Chengdu last year ahead of its first season in the top flight. The game against Yunnan Yukun marked its first fixture at the new-look Shenzhen Stadium.

According to a city statement released ahead of the match, Shenzhen Stadium is now the first venue in Shenzhen to meet the standards for hosting international football.

The renovation of the stadium has seen it fitted with intelligent temperature control technology and a 3D drainage system, ensuring the pitch can be used within 20 minutes of heavy rainfall.

The pitch is also fitted with a lighting system to help the turf grow, along with a sub-surface ventilation system. Other features of the stadium include augmented reality technology, Bluetooth beacons and interactive map services to allow fans to navigate around the venue.

An ultra-high-definition display screen spanning 141 square metres has also been fitted, while 594 of the stadium’s bathroom stalls can be converted for use by men or women, depending on demand.

Shenzhen Peng City finished 14th in the Chinese Super League last season.
