Spanish LaLiga club Atlético de Madrid has extended its partnership with Mahou San Miguel, which will become the first official sponsor of its planned Sports City complex.

The new deal will run until 2035 and will see Mahou Cinco Estrellas and Solán de Cabras products sold at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

The Sports City project will be built near the stadium and will span a total area of 265,000 square metres, distributed among five plots, two of which will be designated for municipal use.

Last month, it emerged that Atlético had partnered with development and investment firm López Real Inversiones to support its plans for the Sports City.

Atlético and López Real Inversiones will reportedly each contribute €80m (£67m/$87m) towards the project, which is set to break ground in the coming months. It is hoped that the complex will be operational by 2026.

Reports emerged last year that the budget for the project had risen to around €350m, much higher than the €200m that was originally touted. The complex will include shops, a supermarket, a bowling alley, leisure and sports facilities, cinemas, a children’s area and restaurants, along with residential space for players in Atlético’s youth academy.

Commenting on the Mahou San Miguel deal, Atlético president Enrique Cerezo said: “More than 50 years ago, a partnership was born between Atlético de Madrid and Mahou San Miguel that goes beyond sponsorship.

“A historic relationship based on mutual trust and respect. Mahou has been our neighbour for many of these years next to the beloved Estadio Vicente Calderón, demonstrating loyalty and commitment. We have been together through thick and thin, and, without a doubt, it has long been part of the red and white family.”
