Charlotte Motor Speedway has installed a high-definition LED screen made by digiLED, aiming to improve the fan experience and make the North Carolina venue more sustainable.

The new custom-built screen is 15,500 square feet with more than 5.5 million pixels and is said to bring unprecedented brightness, clarity, and colour accuracy for NASCAR fans.

It weighs more than 47.6 tonnes and is supported by six 30-foot steel pillars. GoVision, which installed the screen, reused the steel structure from the original screen to save it from being disposed of.

An average 1.83 tons of CO2 is emitted for every ton of steel produced, which amounts to 7% of the world’s total carbon dioxide emissions each year.

“Fifteen years ago, the cost and impact of steel was a tiny consideration, now steel is a major part of any project’s budget, especially one as large as Charlotte Motor Speedway,” said head of technical at digiLED, Tom Mudd.

“By repurposing the original steel framework, the project avoided unnecessary waste and supported eco-friendly practices, which was a key priority for all involved.”

The speedway enjoys a sunny climate but is sometimes threatened by hurricanes and tornadoes which can shorten a screen’s lifetime.

As a result, the digiLED vision ultra screen is aluminium backed to increase strength and deliver greater thermal management, meaning less maintenance is required than fan cooled screens.

“This project embodies everything that we stand for at digiLED: great results, show stopping visuals and sympathetic, environmentally aware solutions that mean the screen will last,” said Mudd.

“Our partnership with GoVision has delivered amazing results and created something we are all really pleased with.”

GoVision founder Chris Curtis added: “We are incredibly proud of this installation.

“This screen, supplied by digiLED, doesn’t just set new standards for size, but also for clarity and brightness, ensuring that every fan has the best seat in the house. Whether it’s the thrill of a race or the excitement of a live concert, this LED board will enhance our fan experience like never before.”

NASCAR fans will be able to see the screen on May 25 when Charlotte Motor Speedway hosts the Coca-Cola 600.
