Engineering company Vielca Ingenerios has claimed that construction work on Valencia CF’s Nou Mestalla will cost 17% more than planned.

The audit report prepared by the company states that “the cost of the stadium, including the part already built, will rise from €291.89m (£249.4m/$329.6m) to €341.46m”.

It also states that “it can be considered to meet high-quality requirements thanks to the prescribed standards, the construction solutions adopted, and the incorporation of modern facilities”.

Valencia, which plays in Spain’s LaLiga, restarted the project in January after it was originally suspended in February 2009.

The club is aiming for it to be completed in the summer of 2027.

In June 2022, revised plans were presented for the Nou Mestalla which included a seating capacity of 70,044.

Today (Tuesday), representatives from the Generalitat Valenciana visited the stadium’s construction site to see the progress being made by FCC Construcción which is carrying out the works.

FCC oversaw the construction of Atlético de Madrid’s stadium, the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. The company also worked on Espanyol’s RCDE Stadium and the redevelopment of Real Madrid’s Estadio Santiago Bernabéu.

“The first impression was inspiring, allowing us to directly understand the ownership’s plans, which are already being executed with the contractor,” said Antonio Galvañ, Secretary of State at the Generalitat Valenciana.

“We were able to perceive the technical and quality specifications of a stadium that we hope to enjoy in 2027 and attend top-level matches.

“From the Generalitat Valenciana, we fully support this project because both Valencia CF and its surroundings are iconic for the city and the Valencian Community.

“It’s a large-scale project with complex technical aspects. Regarding occupational risk prevention, we have complete collaboration from both the GVA and Invassat, which will be fully available to the contractor and ownership to resolve any prevention-related matters.”

Currently, FCC is carrying out interior architectural work before a contract is set to be awarded for the roof construction.

The stadium is intended to replace Valencia’s current Mestalla Stadium which was built in 1923 and has a capacity of 49,430.

The basic concrete structure of the new venue was built between August 2007 and February 2009 but work was since halted due to financial constraints.

In May 2008, four construction workers were also killed on the Nou Mestalla site following the collapse of scaffolding.
