Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) is set to bring a multi-million-dollar art and memorabilia collection to the upgraded Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
The District Arts Collection was created by MSE, which is contributing to major renovation works at the 20,356-capacity venue, in partnership with art collection development and implementation organisation, Sports & The Arts.
“The District Arts Collection marks a massive step in Monumental Sports’ commitment to not only elevate the fan experience at the new arena but to create a unique destination to celebrate the vibrant artistic spirit of Washington, D.C.,” said Jim Van Stone, president of business operations and chief commercial officer at MSE.
“This undertaking is more than just an exhibition; it’s a living tribute to our community, showcasing local talent while honouring the rich history of our region and our arena’s place within it.
“We invite artists to join us in this exciting journey as we transform our arena into a cultural hub for art and entertainment in the nation’s capital.”
The collection will span every interior level of the arena as well as the exterior in a bid to transform the venue into a “vibrant living gallery” for guests to explore.
It is designed to celebrate the culture of Washington, D.C. and will feature works by local artists, pieces on loan from institutions in the city, and team memorabilia from the NHL’s Washington Capitals, NBA’s Washington Wizards and more.
These include the original goal structure and net from Alexander Ovechkin’s record-breaking 895th NHL regular-season goal.
The wide-ranging transformation of Capital One Arena, which serves as the home of the Wizards and the Capitals, is expected to be delivered in time for the 2027-28 season.
A full redesign of entrances and exits, safety, lighting, traffic mitigation and public transportation is planned.
A total of $800m (£606m/€702m) is budgeted to be spent on the renovation in total.
