A redevelopment project has been presented for the Stadio Via del Mare, the home stadium of Italian Serie A club US Lecce.
The project calls for a complete revamp of the stadium and includes a new roof covering all stands, with a total investment of €36m (£30.1m/$38.9m) planned. Plans have also been put forward to develop the Palasport venue in Lecce, with an additional €2.7m earmarked for this project.
The two projects will form part of the government funding allocated for the 2026 edition of the Mediterranean Games, which will take place in nearby Taranto. The City of Lecce has received €39m in funding for the Games.
The City of Lecce has released a video on its Facebook page to showcase what a revamped Stadio Via del Mare could look like. The project is set to be put out to tender in the coming months, with a view to being completed in less than a year.
Mayor of Lecce Adriana Poli Bortone said: “The stadium will undergo a significant transformation that will increase its functionality for all spectators and athletes. The priority is to respect the standards required by these Games, but these are works that will improve the offer for participation in future events. Everyone, absolutely everyone, will be able to enjoy the services and accessibility to the Via del Mare facility.”
The presentation comes after a funding package for the renovation project was approved back in August. With a current capacity of 31,461, the Via del Mare has been Lecce’s home since it first opened in 1966.
The Mediterranean Games are set to take place from August 21 to September 3 next year.
