The Virgin Media O2-led 5G MoDE project, which has been backed by the UK government, successfully deployed an O-RAN solution at London’s Allianz Stadium during the recent Six Nations series.
The trial was delivered by Virgin Media O2 and Mavenir during the England vs Italy match and showcased how open network solutions can help manage connectivity and ensure “robust and reliable” mobile networks during major events.
As part of the deployment, the temporary O-RAN Cell On Wheels was rolled out in the fan zone before and after the match. Virgin Media O2 said the findings and insights gained from the project will serve as a “valuable foundation” for future radio access network deployments and support ongoing efforts to diversify the UK’s telecoms ecosystem.
Telefónica has carried out 5G tests at Madrid’s Movistar Arena, with fans able to sample virtual reality headsets during recent basketball games.
The initiative was promoted by 5TONIC, an open-innovation laboratory for 5G technologies, of which Telefónica is a founding member. During the tests, in-venue experiences company YBVR deployed 180-degree and 360-degree video cameras on the basketball court at Movistar Arena to develop immersive fan experiences for supporters watching in the arena and at home.
Prosegur Security also deployed surveillance devices such as cameras, robots and LiDAR sensors at the arena as part of a ‘smart crowd monitoring’ trial.
Telefónica is the parent company of Movistar, which took on naming rights to the arena at the start of the year. The venue was previously known as WiZink Center.
The National Hockey League (NHL) has announced a new multi-year partnership with global cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks.
The deal will highlight the importance of cybersecurity across the league and its arenas. Palo Alto Networks has partnered with the NHL since 2009, with the league using the company’s next-generation firewalls, cloud security and AI-powered security operations.
The new agreement provides Palo Alto Networks with a range of exclusive marketing rights and designations.
Telecommunications company KT Corporation has announced that Suwon kt wiz Park has become the first AI-enabled professional sports stadium in South Korea.
KT has renovated the venue into what it claims is now an ‘AI Stadium’ as part of the launch of the company’s artificial intelligence master brand, ‘K intelligence’.
