The Vila Nova de Famalicão City Council has announced plans to launch an international public tender for the design, construction and operation of the new Estádio Municipal de Famalicão.

The stadium will serve as the new home of Portuguese Primeira Liga football team FC Famalicão. It will replace the current venue of the same name, which has a capacity of around 5,000.

The new stadium, which would form part of a wider sports and business complex, will have a seated capacity of around 10,000.

As well as the construction of a new stadium, the council’s tender calls for the revitalisation of a central area of Vila Nova de Famalicão. The tender will result in the appointment of a private developer to carry out the construction work.

Interested investors and developers will submit proposals for a plot of land with a maximum total construction area of around 85,000 square metres. The stadium will have four covered stands and will cover around 19,900 square metres.

Mário Passos, Mayor of Vila Nova de Famalicão, said that the capacity of the stadium and the size of the site may vary. Passos added that the concession period stated in the tender is 53 years – three for construction and 50 for operation.

FC Famalicão president Miguel Ribeiro said: “I believe that this is a project that could be a reference and replicated around the world because it is not just a stadium for playing every 15 days. Based on what has been presented here, the stadium and everything that surrounds it could create a new centrality for Famalicão, because the aim is for its entire surrounding area to be able to be enjoyed seven days a week.”

FC Famalicão was promoted to the Primeira Liga in 2019. The club finished eighth last season and currently sits ninth in the table.
