Plans have been revealed for the opening ceremony of Kai Tak Sports Park (KTSP), with the first batch of tickets selling out in 35 minutes as they were released today (Friday).

The Hong Kong Government announced this month that Kai Tak Stadium will officially open on March 1, following the successful staging of the latest test event at the cornerstone of the Kai Tak Sports Park development.

Plans for the opening ceremony have now been detailed, with Hong Kong action movie star Donnie Yen set to feature alongside Cantopop stars Joey Yung, Gin Lee and Michael ‘MC’ Cheung Tin-fu, singers George Lam Tsz-cheung and Sally Yeh Chen-ven, and mainland Chinese celebrity Li Yuchun.

Sports stars will also be represented in the form of Hong Kong Olympic gold medal fencer Vivian Kong Man-wai; badminton players Tang Chun-man, Tse Ying-suet and Lin Dan; and table tennis players Doo Hoi-kem and Fan Zhendong.

The first batch of 8,500 tickets were put on sale at 10am local time today, rapidly being snapped up by fans. They were handed a nominal price of HK$10 (£1/€1.23/$1.29) with proceeds donated to the Community Chest of Hong Kong for charity purposes.

KTSP said the event will feature four main thematic segments showcasing “Hong Kong’s significant role in sports and cultural exchanges over the years”. It added: “Expect a vibrant display of performances, including sports, large-scale dance, and musical performances as we celebrate the opening of the Kai Tak Sports Park.”

A total of 33,600 tickets will ultimately be made available, divided equally for allocation between KTSP and the Government. Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Rosanna Law Shuk-pui, has said the event will be recorded and broadcast on four free-TV channels – RTHK, TVB, VIU and HOY TV – from 9.30pm, three hours after the ceremony commences.

She stated that the event will not be broadcast live so as to provide a comprehensive production incorporating prerecorded videos highlighting the Park’s features.

Kai Tak Stadium staged its first test event on January 5 as over 10,000 people attended a university rugby sevens tournament. Another large-scale stress test was held on February 4, with Kai Tak Stadium operating at its 50,000 capacity for a Hong Kong Premier League U22 football match between Kitchee and North District.

Kai Tak Stadium’s first major event is currently scheduled to be Hong Kong’s leg of World Rugby’s SVNS series from March 28-30. British band Coldplay will also stage four concerts at the stadium from April 8-12.

The wider Sports Park complex also includes the 10,000-capacity Kai Tak Arena and the 5,000-capacity Youth Sports Ground.
