Valladolid Mayor Jesús Julio Carnero has insisted that renovation work on Real Valladolid’s José Zorrilla stadium is progressing despite club president Ronaldo Nazario expressing his desire to sell.
Carnero said that the city council and the LaLiga club will continue to work “internally” on remodelling the 27,618-seat venue and developing a “sports city” on the premises.
This is in spite of president and majority shareholder of the club Ronaldo, the former Brazilian footballer, aiming to sell his stake in the side.
In an interview with Europa Press, Carnero stated that the city council maintains a “good, fluid, and communicative” relationship with the club in regards to the redevelopment projects.
The details of the club’s plans include around €40m (£33m/$41m) to be spent on a new roof that will cover three stands and a new upper south stand that will increase the stadium’s capacity to between 30,000 and 32,000.
The sports city will cost around €15m and see the construction of a 2,000-capacity stadium, two new pitches and facilities to be used by club staff and youth academy players.
It will span around 40,000 square metres and aims at inspiring growth at all levels of the club.
Ronaldo currently holds an 82.7% stake in Real Valladolid through his company Tara Sports 2018 SL.
The announcement of his aim to sell comes less than a year after he sold his share of Brazilian football club Cruzeiro.
After halving the club’s debt and bringing it back to the top-flight of domestic football in the country, Ronaldo sold his stake in the club having spent around $70m in total.
Despite this, he still received criticism for on-pitch performances, something which has also marred his spell at Valladolid.
The club currently sits bottom of the LaLiga table with 18 games played.
