The cost of a major renovation project at Berlin’s Jahn-Sportpark has risen to more than €300m (£255m/$324m).
The complex primarily serves as an athletics venue but is set to be converted into a multi-sport destination. O+M Architekten has designed the new-look stadium that will sit at the heart of the complex.
The project had originally been due to cost €182m, but German newspaper Tagesspiegel reported earlier this week that the budget has increased to more than €300m. The Berlin Senate has since confirmed this to the city’s House of Representatives.
An increase in construction costs has been cited as a main reason for the price rise. Demolition of the current venue had been due to commence later this year, with the new-look venue slated to open in 2027.
Local broadcaster RBB 24 has reported that this timeline is now in doubt due to the cost increases, with the Senate said to be anticipating delays from 2026 onwards.
The new stadium at Jahn-Sportpark would have a capacity of 20,000, making it the third largest stadium in Berlin behind the Olympiastadion and Stadion An der Försterei.
As well as the new stadium, the project will include football, volleyball and tennis facilities, and a new meeting centre. The main committee of Berlin’s House of Representatives is set to meet on June 12 to discuss the project in more detail.
First opened in 1952, the Sportpark has been the subject of much debate over its long-term future. The Sportpark, and in particular the stadium, are currently deemed to have significant functional deficiencies. Due to numerous safety-related structural defects, the stadium had to be temporarily closed in January 2021 and can only be used to a limited extent since it reopened in summer 2021.
